Prescription & Contact Lenses
With so many choices out there, knowing what to ask for when you see your eye doctor and optician may seem confusing. For instance, many people think all they can expect from their glasses is vision correction. But you can - and should - expect more from your lenses.
Below are some questions that can help you find the lens technologies and features that will be most important to you.
Do you have a strong prescription?
You don't need to wear those coke bottle lenses anymore! Because of the ability to bend light more efficiently, nearsighted lenses made of high-index materials have thinner edges than the same prescription made from conventional plastic materials. Thinner edges require less lens material, which in turn reduces the overall weight of the lenses.
For farsighted prescriptions, high index lenses have an aspheric design which makes the lenses flatter and reduces the magnified "bug-eye" look.
The opticians at Discerning Eye are experts at determining what kind of high-index material will best suit you and the frame you choose.
Have trouble seeing up close?
Progressive lenses provide distance, mid-range, and near vision, with all the in-between corrections. There are many choices among the various styles of progressive lenses. The newest lens technology brings high definition to your lenses. Even when your vision is corrected to 20/20, it is possible that higher-order aberrations can affect your vision. High-def lenses are designed to provide sharper vision in all lighting conditions and reduce glare for nighttime driving and other night vision tasks.
Reading glasses can help. Discerning Eye carries a large selection of super-cool over the counter reading glasses for both men and women.
Do you use a computer often?
Discerning Eye offers lenses created just for computer use. Our office and computer lenses relieve both eyestrain and tiredness.
Bothered by reflection in your lenses?
Light bouncing off fluorescent lights and computer screens can cause eye fatigue. If you drive at night, the glare of oncoming headlights can be distracting and dangerous. Anti-reflective lens treatments can make a real difference. At Discerning Eye, all of our lenses include the anti-reflective (AR) coating.
Conventional lenses reflect about 8% of the light that would otherwise reach the allowing. High-index lenses reflect up to 50% more light than conventional plastic lenses. When an anti-reflective coating is applied, your lenses will transmit 8-10% more light to your eye resulting in sharper vision with less glare--a real advantage for night driving and computer use. Because AR coatings eliminate reflections, they make lenses appear even thinner.
At Discerning Eye, we believe high-quality AR treatments are so important they are included with every lens we sell.
Active in sports?
Durability and eye protection are a must. Polycarbonate and the technologically advanced Trivex lenses could be what you are looking for.
Looking for sunglasses?
Polarized sunglasses reduce surface glare from any flat reflective surface including water, snow, cars, and pavement. At Discerning Eye, we offer polarized lenses in all of our prescription sunglasses.
Not all sunglasses are created equal! Maui Jim's patented Polarized Plus technology actually offers more protection than standard polarized sunglasses.
